Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Devotional
One of the most dangerous religious lies is this: “I must earn God’s love.” Many people live exhausted Christian lives because they believe God’s love rises and falls with their performance. If they do well, they think God is pleased enough to love them. If they fail, they imagine God is finished with them.

But salvation is not earned. Grace is a gift. If we could earn it, it would not be grace.

This does not mean obedience is unimportant. True faith produces works. But works are the fruit of salvation, not the root of salvation. We do not obey God to make Him love us; we obey because He first loved us.

The cross of Jesus Christ proves God’s love more clearly than our emotions ever could. When Satan accuses you, point to Calvary. When guilt overwhelms you, remember grace. When pride tempts you to boast, remember: “Not of works.”

Reflection

  • Do you sometimes feel God loves you more when you are “good” and less when you fail?
  • Are you trying to earn what Christ has already paid for?
  • Do your good works flow from love or from fear?

Prayer
Father, thank You for saving by grace through faith. Forgive me for trying to earn what You freely give. Help me obey You out of love, not fear. Keep my eyes on Jesus and His finished work. Amen.

Memorize Ephesians 2:8-9. Every time you feel like you must earn God’s acceptance, repeat those verses aloud.
