“For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.”
Devotional
After David’s sin, he tried to cover it: lies, schemes, sending Uriah to the front lines. For a while, it may have looked successful. But then Nathan the prophet came with a story about a rich man stealing a poor man’s lamb.
David burned with anger, saying the man deserved to die. Nathan then said, “Thou art the man.”
We are often hardest on sins we ourselves are hiding. We want judgment on others while wanting mercy for ourselves. But God is not fooled.
You can hide sin from:
- Your spouse
- Your parents or children
- Your church
- Your pastor
But you cannot hide it from God. Ever.
“Be sure your sin will find you out” doesn’t mean God enjoys exposing you; it means He loves you too much to let you be destroyed by secret sin. Exposure is often His severe mercy, calling you back to repentance.
The wise response is not to run farther with excuses, but to fall on your knees, as David did in Psalm 51, and seek God’s cleansing.
Reflection
- Is there anything in your life right now that you are trying to hide—from people, from your church, even from your own conscience?
- Do you fear being found out more than you fear dishonoring God?
Prayer
Holy God,
I acknowledge that there is nothing hidden from Your sight. My thoughts, motives, and actions are all open before You. I confess that at times I have tried to cover or excuse my sin. I lay it before You now. Cleanse me, correct me, and keep me from self-deception. Help me to walk in the light, not in the shadows. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Action
Take one concrete step into the light:
- If your sin is only before God, fully confess it to Him and turn from it.
- If others are involved, pray for courage and then tell the truth to the person who needs to hear it, or to a trusted, godly counselor who can help you make it right.
