“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Devotional
We often plan carefully for our earthly future—retirement, savings, education, home improvements. None of that is wrong. But Jesus commands a different order:
- First: the kingdom of God
- Then: “all these things” added in God’s way and time
The rich man in Luke 12 built bigger barns and told his soul, “take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry,” but God called him a fool and required his soul that night. His fatal mistake was not that he had things, but that he lived for things and not for God.
Many of us “plan” for decades on earth while assuming we can get serious about God “later.” The problem is, later is not promised. And even before death, the more we push God down the priority list, the duller His voice becomes to us.
When God is truly first, everything else falls into its proper place. When God is squeezed to the margins, even good things become dangerous distractions.
Reflection
- Look at your last week: did your schedule show that God is first?
- If someone only saw how you spent your time, what would they say your top priority is?
Prayer
Father,
Forgive me for the times I have put Your kingdom second, third, or last. I confess that I often seek my own comfort, plans, and goals before I seek You. Rearrange my priorities. Teach me to seek You first, trusting that You will take care of “all these things” according to Your wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Action
Choose one tangible way today to put God first:
- Start your day with Scripture before you look at your phone, OR
- Fast one meal and use that time to pray, OR
- Cancel or shorten one entertainment activity to spend that time with God instead.
Write down what you chose and follow through.
