“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
Devotional
Some people teach, or imply, that if you belong to God, nothing painful should happen to you. But Scripture says otherwise. Job suffered deeply. Joseph was betrayed. Paul was beaten and imprisoned. The disciples faced storms. Even Jesus, the sinless Son of God, suffered.
Pain does not mean God has left you. Suffering does not always mean you have sinned. Trials can become tools in the hand of God to shape us, strengthen us, and draw us nearer to Him.
James does not say trials are enjoyable. He says we can “count it all joy” because God is doing something through them. Faith that is never tested remains shallow. Patience is often born in places we would never choose.
God may not explain every trial, but He promises to be present in it. He can take what is painful and use it for good.

Reflection
- Have you assumed hardship means God is angry with you?
- How might God be shaping you through your current trial?
- Are you asking only “Why?” or are you also asking, “Lord, what do You want to do in me?”
Prayer
Father, help me trust You in suffering. Remind me that pain does not mean You have abandoned me. Use every trial to strengthen my faith, deepen my patience, and make me more like Christ. Amen.
Action
Write down one difficulty you are facing. Beside it, write Romans 8:28. Pray specifically that God would use that situation for His purpose.
