Scripture Reading – Romans 8:17 (KJV)
“And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”
Devotional
Many love the promise of being heirs with Christ, but stumble over the condition: “if so be that we suffer with him.” Suffering is not an unfortunate footnote to the Christian life; it is part of the path. God uses suffering as a tool to cut away what we don’t need and to shape us to be like Jesus.
Jesus stepped down from glory, took on flesh, and willingly suffered—mocked, beaten, crucified—for us. If our Savior walked that road, we should not be shocked when He calls us to walk it after Him.
This doesn’t mean every believer will be beaten, imprisoned, or martyred, though some are. But it does mean that faithfulness to Christ will cost you something—comfort, reputation, relationships, security, or even your life. The question is not if you will suffer, but how you will respond.
Paul could say, “To live is Christ, and to die is gain.” When you know that death only ushers you into the presence of the One you love, fear loses its grip. When you see your trials as opportunities to glorify God, suffering becomes seed for eternal joy.
Those who suffer with Christ will be glorified with Christ. The paycheck will be worth it all.
Reflection
Where are you currently suffering—physically, emotionally, relationally, or spiritually? How could that very place become a platform to glorify Christ rather than a reason to grow bitter?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You suffered for me so I could have eternal life.
Forgive me for complaining or shrinking back when suffering comes.
Teach me to rejoice in trials, not because they are pleasant, but because You use them to make me more like You.
Give me courage to stand for You, whatever it costs, and fix my eyes on the glory to come.
In Your precious name, Amen.
