Scripture Reading: Matthew 16:15–17 (KJV)

  • Matthew 16:15–17 – “He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.”

  • Luke 22:31–32 – “And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”

Devotional

Peter is one of the most striking examples of how a believer can be used by God in one moment and targeted by Satan the next.

In Matthew 16, Peter gives one of the clearest confessions in all of Scripture: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus commends him and points out that this understanding came straight from the Father.

But in Luke 22, Jesus gives Peter a sobering warning: “Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.” The same man who received revelation from God also drew the attention and desire of Satan.

Many believers know that God has a plan for their lives, but do not live as if Satan also has a plan. The devil cannot snatch you out of Christ’s hand if you are truly saved, but he can sift you—shaking, testing, and exposing weaknesses—so that he might find something in you he can use: bitterness, pride, fear, resentment, or lust. Anything that can be turned toward his agenda.

Jesus didn’t tell Peter this to terrify him, but to prepare him. He also said, “But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not.” Jesus both warns and intercedes. He lets Peter know: “You are in a real spiritual battle, but you are not alone in it.”

The same is true of you.

Reflection

  • Do you think more about God’s plan for your life than about Satan’s opposition to it?
  • Where have you felt “sifted” recently—areas of pressure, temptation, or testing?
  • How does it change your perspective to know that Christ is praying for you (Hebrews 7:25)?

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Open my eyes to the reality of spiritual warfare. I thank Thee that, like Peter, I am known by Thee and prayed for by Thee. Show me where Satan has been sifting my life, and reveal any areas he might use for his purposes. Strengthen my faith so that it fail not, and teach me to stand in Thy power, not my own. In Thy precious name I pray, Amen.

Action

Write down three areas of your life where you feel most vulnerable (for example: anger, discouragement, fear of people, secret sin).
Next to each one, write this:
“Jesus is praying for me here.”
Keep that list in your Bible and look at it during the week.
