Joshua 1:8
8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
Psalm 1:2
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Finding the Bible is not enough; we must read it. God commanded Joshua, a military leader, to be a man of the Book. His success wasn’t tied to his weapons, but to his meditation on God’s Word “day and night.” Psalm 1 echoes the same truth: the blessed person delights in and meditates on God’s law continually.
Many people treat the Bible like the man in the illustration who loved to touch and smell the books but could not read them. Some like to carry a Bible, own a nice leather edition, or feel “religious” having it nearby, but they rarely open it to listen to God.
Reading Scripture is how God’s voice comes to us in a clear, fixed, objective way. Feelings change. Opinions shift. Cultural voices shout. But the Word stands. When we neglect reading it, we are essentially choosing silence from Heaven and noise from everywhere else.
Father, thank You for giving me a clear, written Word. I ask You to overcome my laziness, my distractions, and my excuses. Give me grace to read and think on Scripture daily. Let my mind and heart be shaped by Your truth rather than the world’s noise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Today, read one complete chapter from the Bible slowly (for example, Psalm 1, John 3, or 2 Kings 22). Underline or mark one verse that stands out to you. Keep that Bible open for at least 5 minutes and reread that verse a second time.
