“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
Ephesians 2:8–10
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
Devotional
There is a song that says, “I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now.” That’s the heart of someone who has seen both the emptiness of the world and the richness of Christ.
Paul could say, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Why? Because:
- He understood salvation is by grace, not by works.
- He knew he belonged to God—“we are his workmanship.”
- He lived for Christ’s glory, not his own.
Once you see what Christ has really done—bearing your sin, rising again, offering peace with God, eternal life, real joy—then every offer from the world starts to look cheap. The devil can offer “everything that’s got a name,” but it cannot compare to knowing Jesus.
There is no trade worth it:
- Not lust
- Not money
- Not status
- Not entertainment
- Not self-righteousness
To keep your salvation, you do not work; Christ finished that. But to keep the joy of your salvation, you must daily choose Christ over the world’s offers. You were created in Christ Jesus for good works—living to glorify Him, not yourself.

- Complete this sentence honestly: “For to me to live is _______.” Is it truly Christ, or something else?
- If you had to choose one thing today that most tempts you to trade away joy and obedience, what would it be?
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You that my salvation is by grace and not by my works. I am Your workmanship. I confess that I have often lived as if life is about me—my comfort, my plans, my reputation. Today I declare: to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Strengthen me to refuse every trade this world offers that would dull my love for You. Use me in the good works You have prepared for me. In Your name I pray, Amen.

Write down this statement and keep it somewhere you will see it today:
“There is no trade worth my soul, my Savior, or the joy of my salvation.”
Each time you feel tempted—toward anger, lust, selfishness, laziness, or compromise—pause, look at that sentence (or recall it), and deliberately say “no” to the trade and “yes” to Christ.
