Scripture Reading: Acts 16:23–25 (KJV)

Acts 16:23–25
23 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:
24 Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.
25 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

Devotional

Paul and Silas had been faithfully preaching Christ. For that obedience, they were stripped, beaten, and thrown into the inner prison—the darkest, filthiest part of the jail—with their feet in stocks. From a human standpoint, this makes no sense. They were in the very center of God’s will, yet they were in the very worst place of man’s cruelty.

But notice what they did “at midnight”: “Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God.” They did not wait for daybreak, for the wounds to heal, or for the doors to open before they worshiped. Right there, in the mud, darkness, and pain, they turned that dungeon into a sanctuary.

Your “inner prison” might be grief, sickness, loss, anxiety, or a situation that feels unfair and crushing. The enemy whispers: “If God really loved you, you wouldn’t be here.” Yet this passage shows us something vital: God did not stand outside the prison waiting on Paul and Silas to get out. He was with them in the prison.

They didn’t sing because their circumstances were good. They sang because their God was good—and present.

Reflection

  • Where is your “inner prison” right now? Name it honestly before God.
  • Have you been waiting for God to change your situation before you will praise Him?

Prayer

Lord God,
You see the dark places of my life, the fears, the hurts, and the questions I don’t voice to anyone. Thank You that You do not abandon me in my midnight hour. Help me to believe You are with me in the dungeon as surely as You are with me on the mountaintop. Teach me to pray and to praise, not because I feel like it, but because You are worthy and present. Turn my place of pain into a sanctuary of praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Action

Today, choose one specific hardship you are facing.

  1. Write it down on paper.
  2. Beneath it, write: “God is with me in this.”
  3. Spend 5–10 minutes aloud (or quietly) praising God right in the middle of that situation—thank Him for His presence, His faithfulness, and His love, even if nothing has changed yet.
