2 Kings 22:8, 10–11
8 And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.
10 And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.
11 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.
God’s people had allowed His house to fall into disrepair and His Word to be buried under years of neglect. The “book of the law” was in the temple, but no one was reading it. It had been disregarded so long that when it was finally read to the king, he reacted with shock and grief.
Many homes today are just like that temple. The Bible is present, but practically lost—on a shelf, in a box, in a drawer, or buried under clutter. We may “have a Bible,” but functionally we live as if we don’t. We make decisions, raise children, manage money, handle conflict, and shape our priorities with little reference to the Word that God has provided.
Before revival came to Judah, someone had to find the book. Before renewal comes to us, we must do the same. The first step is simple but serious: bring the Bible from the background to the forefront of your life again.
Lord, I confess that I have often treated Your Word lightly. Forgive me for neglecting the Bible and living by my own wisdom. Help me to “find the book” again—physically, by picking it up, and spiritually, by giving it first place in my life. Awaken in me a hunger for Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Physically locate your main Bible today. Put it in a prominent, permanent spot where you live (nightstand, kitchen table, desk). Make a visible change that says, “This Book matters here.”
