Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:3 (KJV)

  • Ephesians 4:3 – “Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
  • 1 Peter 5:8 – “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

Devotional

One of Satan’s primary goals is to divide Christ’s church from the inside.

The early church in Acts saw thousands saved, bold preaching, miracles of healing, and unstoppable evangelism. When persecution from the outside failed to stop them, Satan tried a different strategy—corruption and hypocrisy from within (Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira).

The sermon you heard pointed out that Satan often walks into church with us. He loves to find a willing vessel: a bitter spirit, a gossiping tongue, a critical heart, or an unforgiving attitude. One person stirred up can cool down the fire of revival in a whole congregation.

Paul says we must be “endeavouring” to keep unity. That word implies effort, intentionality, and vigilance. Unity does not maintain itself. In every church there will be disagreements, preferences, personalities that rub. Satan wants to take those natural frictions and turn them into full-blown divisions.

The question is not, “Is Satan trying to divide the church?” The question is, “Will he be able to use me to do it?”

Reflection

  • When you talk about your church, are your words more often encouraging or critical?
  • Have you been part of unnecessary division, cliques, or ongoing drama in the church family?
  • Is there anyone in your church toward whom you hold resentment or a cold heart?

Prayer

Father,
Forgive me for the times I have allowed my words, attitudes, or actions to harm the unity of Thy church. I do not want to be a tool in Satan’s hand. Give me a heart that loves peace and pursues it. Help me to see my brothers and sisters as those for whom Christ died, not as opponents. Guard my tongue and purify my motives, that I may help to build up, not tear down. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Action

Today, do one specific thing to promote unity in your local church:

  • Apologize to someone you have been short with or critical of.
  • Send a note or message of appreciation to a church member or leader.
  • Refuse to participate in a negative conversation; instead, say something positive.
