“For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.”
Paul did not say, “I know what church I joined,” or “I know what good works I have done.” He said, “I know whom I have believed.” His confidence was not in himself, his ministry, his suffering, or his reputation. His assurance rested in Jesus Christ.
The most important question anyone can answer is not, “Am I religious?” or “Have I been good?” The question is: “Am I saved by the blood of Jesus Christ?” If you had only twelve hours to live, nothing would matter more than knowing that your soul is right with God.
Salvation is not earned by works, church attendance, baptism, or morality. True salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. But when Christ truly saves a person, that life begins to show fruit. A saved person may stumble, but they will not be comfortable living apart from God.
If you stood before God today, what would you be trusting in—your goodness, your church membership, your baptism, or Jesus Christ alone?
Lord Jesus, help me to know that I know that I belong to You. Remove false confidence from my heart. Let my assurance be rooted only in Your finished work on the cross. If there is anything in me that is not surrendered to You, reveal it and draw me closer. Amen.
Take time today to examine your testimony. Write down when and how you came to trust Christ as Savior. If you are unsure of your salvation, talk to a pastor or mature believer and open God’s Word together.
