Scripture Reading: Romans 12:1 (KJV)
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”
Devotional
Worship is not us trying to get God’s attention; it is our response to the attention He has already given us. Paul appeals to us “by the mercies of God.” God has taken the first step—He created you, sustained you, protected you, and above all, sent His Son to save you. Worship begins when we see His mercy and respond.
Paul describes worship as presenting our bodies a living sacrifice. In the Old Testament, sacrifices were placed on the altar and given completely to God. Now God calls you, not to a dead sacrifice, but to a living one—your whole life laid before Him. This is called your “reasonable service.” In other words, given all that God has done, this total surrender is the only response that makes sense.
Worship is far more than singing; it is saying, “Lord, all that I am—my body, my time, my plans, my possessions—belongs to You.” This is how we give pleasure back to the One who made us for His pleasure.
Reflection
Prayer
Merciful Father,
Thou hast shown me great mercy in countless ways. Because of Thy mercies, I present myself to Thee. Take my body, my mind, my desires, and my plans. Make me a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto Thee. Show me any area I have held back, and give me grace to surrender it in worship.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Action
Write down three specific “mercies of God” you are thankful for. Then, in prayer, verbally dedicate one practical area of your life (your schedule, your work, your home, etc.) to God as an act of worship.
