Scripture Reading – John 18:36–37 (KJV)
“Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”
Pilate stood eye to eye with truth and missed it. He wasn’t staring at an idea, a philosophy, or a religious system. He was staring at a Person—Jesus Christ, who said He came “to bear witness unto the truth.”
Our world today asks the same question: “What is truth?” Many conclude there is no absolute truth. Even in churches, some think truth is flexible—“true for you, but not for me.” But if truth changes with each person and each situation, it isn’t really truth at all.
Jesus declared His kingdom is “not of this world.” That means His rule, His standards, and His truth are not set by culture, trends, or public opinion. They are set by the Father and revealed by the Son. Truth is not invented; it is received. It does not come from within us; it comes from above us.
To be “of the truth” is to belong to Jesus, to submit to His Word as final authority, even when it clashes with what we feel or what the world approves. Pilate’s tragedy was not that truth was absent; it was that truth was present and he refused it.
The same is true today. We are not suffering from a lack of access to truth—we are suffering from a lack of surrender to truth.
Lord Jesus,
You are the King whose kingdom is not of this world. You came to bear witness unto the truth. Forgive me for the times I have stood before Your truth and turned away because it wasn’t what I wanted to hear.
Humble my heart. Make me “of the truth,” willing to hear Your voice and submit to it. Help me to see that Your commands are not to harm me, but to free me.
In Your holy name I pray, Amen.
Today, choose one area where you know what Scripture teaches but you’ve been resisting it (forgiveness, purity, honesty, priorities, etc.). Write it down. Then find at least one verse about that issue and pray, “Lord, I submit to Your truth here,” and commit to one concrete step of obedience before the day ends.
