Scripture Reading Hebrews 10:24–25 (KJV)
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Devotional
In the sermon, the pastor challenged the idea that “coming to church” equals “serving God.” Many today treat attendance like a spiritual medal: “I got up, got dressed, came to church—God owes me something.” But Scripture paints a different picture.
The church building is not the church. The people—born again by the blood of Christ—are the church. The gathering is not the totality of our service; it’s where we come to be fed, encouraged, corrected, and equipped so that we can serve Christ when we scatter.
Hebrews 10 doesn’t just tell us to show up. It tells us why we show up: to “consider one another,” to stir each other to “love and to good works,” to exhort one another as we see the day of Christ’s return drawing near. Church is not a passive event to attend but a preparation ground for a life of service.
If all we ever do is sit, soak, and then leave unchanged, we are a long way from “in the service of the King.” True service flows out of love for Christ because He loved us first, not from a sense of bare minimum duty.
Reflection
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for any attitude that treats worship as a box to check instead of a meeting with You and Your people. Help me see myself as part of Your body, not a spectator. When I gather with the saints, teach me to encourage, to love, and to provoke others to good works. Use my time in Your house to equip me for real service in Your world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Action
Next service you attend, intentionally encourage at least one person:
